Mama T has a passion for reviving skills of generations passed. It is important to teach others these skills before they pass away with the elders of our community.
Many of the Traveling Looms and equipment that Mama T brings to events are historic pieces that she and her family have reclaimed and restored. You very well may be touching a piece of history hundreds of years old!
We want to share our appreciation for well build, time tested tools while creating something really COOL with you!
The traveling looms are the home to the symbolic threads that pass between the warp. Guests may choose a colorful tread with a meaning Wildlife, Farmland, Community, Waterways, Air Quality.
Many guests choose symbolic threads that mean a lot to them. Some just choose the color because its their "favorite"!
The Traveling looms will be touring with us at various locations this entire year, please follow our Facebook page or look on our calendar to see where we will be next.
If you would like to host The Community Weaving Project at your location and learn about historic technology, early fashion, historic hand skills or to have us help you create the perfect program for your school, daycare, library or special event. Please reach out.
I guess you could say Mama T's passion to learn old time skills and share them started by being turned away by a local guild who would not "allow" children to attend their meetings. This was a very sad and discouraging time for her own 6 yr old child, who was VERY passionate about wanting to learn how to spin on a spinning wheel. She tried repeatedly to have her child be accepted into the local meetings over the next few years as she grew older. Still turned away every time.
Eventually after many years, of classes , fine tuning and learning through experience, Mama T taught her Daughter ( and many others) foundations of homegrown fiber arts and crafting. Spinning on the spinning wheel, processing raw fibers, drop spindles, simple weaving and so forth.
That 6 yr old child is now a teenager with extensive knowledge of homegrown fiber crafting who continues to learn more and more as the years pass!
This experience thrusted Mama T into making sure hands on experiences for ALL ages and backgrounds are available with her programming. There is NO age limit to attend the Community Weaving Project or many other events! If there is passion there is a way to harbor it and grow!
